Mark Farner - For The People - 2006
1. For The People 4:06
2. Cry Baby 5:07
3. Nadean 3:50
4. Girl 4:27
5. You Know Who I Am 3:39
6. Same Ol,’ Feelin, 4:24
7. You,re My Girl 3:07
8. This Time 3:04
9. Waiting Here For You 4:05
10. Symptoms 3:42
11. Where Do We Go From Here 4:16
The CD starts out impressively with "For The People". As I said in an earlier e-mail, the guitar solo midway through this song simply rocks. This song is A+, as are "Cry Baby" & "Girl". The guitar and vocals in "Girl" are superb, and "Cry Baby" just moves so well. "Same Ol' Feelin' " is good, but could use a little more oomph. Mark's guitar throughout this CD has a lot of grit to it, crunchy sounding, if it can be described that way. The harmony vocals of Beth Griffith on "Girl" are a pleasant treat, and then there's that guitar again......that boy can play. "You Know Who I Am" & "You're My Girl" are Mark's contribution to Beach Music. "Waiting Here For You" is proof positive that very few people can perform a ballad like Mark. This song gives me chills. A+ again. The final song "Where Do We Go From Here" has a beautiful chorus. The vocals again are very impressive. A-
The dual solos of saxophone and guitar on "This Time" are very tight. The rhythm section provides a great background for Mark and Paul to strut.
For The People, Cry Baby, Girl & Waiting Here For You all rate A+. There is not one clunker on this CD. In fact, my only complaint, some of the songs just aren't long enough. "Girl" needs to be at least nine minutes long. The guitar & vocals at the end could go on forever. A fabulous song! "For The People" could either be Mark's new opening song, or a lengthened version could become a "concert staple". Nobody rocks like Mark!
Great job Mark and NrG!!!

Mark's NEW TUNES blew me away...!!! YES! The new CD "For the People" was Well Worth the Wait! I heard it for the first time in Taylor, bought the CD to listen to on the way home, hit "play" in my truck and flew down I-75 with a wider-wingspan than I started with! Thanks to songs like; "For the People" (this hard-rockin' song improved my gas mileage) and "Cry Baby" (SETS such a Strong HOOK that it didn't even take a quick yank to catch me!) I listened to it twice and woke up the next morning and it was still playing in my head! And... WoW...The transcendental "Waiting Here for You" is just PURE SPIRIT in Psalm(song)...WHOA!...Mightn't win a Dove Award (it is worthy) but, for-what-it's-worth... I'd give it my personal non-prestigious; HAWK AWARD!!! You need to check out the song "Girl" ~*beautiful*~ Mark and Beth Griffith have voices that intertwine so soft 'n sweet that it finds the place where you hurt and brushes it by with the words you need to receive...just a masterfully elegant interpretation of emotion too...wow again....
All are great songs on this CD..."Your My Girl", "Symptoms"........Awesome Honesty....Mark really seems to be getting Closer to HIS Home. He's still our Captain (wearing a cuff bracelet bearing the names of our MIA/POW veterans)...Cares SO MUCH about our Country and our People...With GOD and many more than two in agreement....May this be the Season of Promotion...Go Mark... with winged N'rG!
Peace,
--Sue

Mark Farner's new CD "For The People" is a masterpiece of talent.I could not wait to get my hands on the new CD after hearing about it and I was excited when it arrived in the mail during the week of July 4th. No need to go buy fireworks for the July 4th celebration this year, I just placed the CD in the player and the CD itself was fireworks enough, explosive! The CD is so well recorded, the sound is flawless. Mark's vocals are flawless and the song writing!! Mark is just so damn good. The songs are fresh with so much talent behind them, some funk and rock n roll that gets to ya and you have to play them again and again,. I really like the tunes "For the People", "Cry Baby", "Nadean" and "Same ol' Feelin': Thats the 4 that are on top of my list, but the entire CD is outstanding. Thanks Mark!
Thanks Mark, Lesia and NRG
God Bless

We have all waited a long time, and after listening to "For the People" for a week, I can say it was worth the wait!! I've been a fan since 69/70, I think this CD is not only Mark's best solo effort to date, but it rates up there some of the best Grand Funk albums!! I am totally blown away. Great job Mark & the Band!!
Thanks

I received my copy up here in Toronto just yesterday, and almost kissed the Mail Delivery person, when I saw "the package" I've been waitin' for. WOW. . . . Driving home I fired it up in the Subaru and cranked it to "11", with sunroof and windows down.
That's right everybody, it IS the sweet, eye-watering majestic voice of the one and only MARK FARNER!!!!!
I won't reiterate what people have said, already, but I want to be the first to say "Where Do We Go from Here" needs to go on for at least 12 mins. 22 sec, just like the "old days". What a powerful, beautiful, glorious track. It actually brings tears to my eyes it's so wonderful. As soon as I learn the lyrics, I'll be singin' that one in the shower.
(Not a complaint, but an observation. . ) Does anyone else at first listen juggle the emotions between disappointment and euphoria at the same time??? I suppose it's a combination of where's the "ripping guitar" solo's? to realizing that Mark's music has matured, his VOICE is always large (like mine) and I'm as happy as George Bush in foreign
territory!
"Symptoms" is the weakest for me, at present, but everything else is fabulous. I'm 52 yrs. old and I miss the Born To Die/GSGP type "soloing", but Mark Farner is "tops" for me, all I can say is, let's have the next one soon, and a Home DVD that is in Surround Sound featuring some of these tracks. Also Mark, get yer butt on TV and let's get this masterpiece promoted. Jay Leno, Letterman etc., get that Paul Shaffer to reciprocate the favor from the Bosnia CD.

Eleven gems, which one to pick? Like asking which of your children is your favorite? I love the riffs in NADEAN, FOR THE PEOPLE,SAME OLD FEELIN,and THIS TIME.The soulful ballads of CRY BABY,GIRL.YOU'RE MY GIRL and the touching spiritual WAITING HERE FOR YOU reach down to your heartstrings. The political messages in SYMPTOMS,WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE,YOU KNOW WHO I AM, and FOR THE PEOPLE are current themes on anyone's mind who is concerned about our country, our heritage, and what kind of government our forefathers really meant us to have. When did we lose control and how do we get it back? Mark we love them all and want more......

Brother Mark,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the new CD! It is so Awesome! I love ALL the songs on here, each one is so unique, but the 3 songs I love the most are Waiting Here For You, Where Do We Go From Here, and Girl. NRG rocks throughout, and never sounded better!!!! It's great when you sing that we are "one nation under God". We can always count on you to take a stand. When I saw that you recorded this at The Swamp, I realized why the sound quality is so good! And Beth Griffith's voice blends perfectly with yours. Your singing and guitar playing are incredible! I can't wait to hear this new music live in concert! Please don't ever stop writing and recording all your wonderful music. We need you in this old world today. YOU are making a difference! I appreciate all the hard work you ALL put into this new CD. It is such a wonderful gift, brother Mark! Take care and God bless you!

A little bit of funk, little bit of soul, little bit of rock and all Mark Farner. The CD ROCKS. Its nice to hear some new
stuff from Mark. The CD is well put together. Perfect harmonies, Mark's voice is crisp and clear. The band is very tight. I would like to see this CD get the recognition it deserves. Theres stuff on the market now days thats no where near as good as this CD. Buy it, you will like it too. Thanks Mark!

Wow! For The People is awesome. I expected it to be good (all of Mark's songs are) but did not expect it to be this
good. As others have said, worth the wait. All the tracks are great. If you like solid rock and roll, you'll love this CD. My son (age 19) like it as much as I do and is now a major Farner Fan. Looking forward to seeing Mark and NrG soon.

Rock Patriot Is Great!! Run, Don't Walk to Get Your Copy!
WOW! What a great album! I was so anxious for new music by Mark and his band, and am so glad that he continues to make music. What a blessing! Each song is from the heart and soulful, and carries Mark's musical message and stamp on it! Congratulations Mark on putting together what I think is your best album yet! And, that is a big statement considering the volume of terrific music you have put out in the past. To everyone who reads this and has not purchased the CD, don't think twice...buy it now and tell your friends to buy it too. They won't be sorry!! I may need to buy a second copy as I know I will be playing this ALOT!!!! It has not left my CD player since it arrived last week.
Keep the music coming, Mark! Thank you and God Bless you!

Dear Mark, I can't find the words to express how much your music has meant to me and continues to mean to me. Youre one of the best muscians around and the new cd is proof of how talented you are. The song For the people is so good , it not only rocks but it touches my heart, the words are well written and the rest of the cd is right up there and the new songs deserve major air play. The cd is solid and one of the best.

Hey! I picked up a copy of the new CD in Mansfield at the show this weekend. I was impressed by the vocals (lyrics) and guitar on for the people and same ole feeling during the show. I bought a CD and listened to it on the way home and then again at home. I tell you man, it's good, Thanks for years of great music. You rock!
=====================================================================================
Oh my!!!!!!!!!!! The new disc is fantastic. I can't get enough of it. Mr. Mark F. Farner has what it takes. I just hope this tasty disc gets the promotion that it needs and deserves. The band is together/tight/spirited/tasteful/soulful/creative and knows how to get to the heart. This is one hot disc. Thanks guys for making my world brighter!!! Affectionately, --Allan W. Crummett

Sorry Mark, don't mean to hog up space here, but I listened to your disc again today in my car and had it cranked to the max. Dang!!!! Had to let you know... It grabs me!!!!!!! I was riding down the road with both windows down and just a jamming with air guitar and drums! You and the band are a talented bunch. You have the voice and the band was/is in the groove. You have what it takes to deeply connect with people and you sure connect with me. I thank God for you and the band. Please put in another Michigan date before the end of the year. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mark / Leisa, I like you new CD, in particular "For The People". I like your sound (guitar)now, but always loved the sound of you guitar on EPF. I guess I'm a bit harder edged. Your voice is second to none. You were a major influence on turning my life to Christ. Met you and Leisa a couple of times. You got a great woman (so do I). Much better than we deserve, and I'm sure you'll agree.
--Love to all. Brian

Before I get into my review, I've always said that Mark could "sing the phone book", and I'd buy it, cause I think he's that good. I am a bit jaded being a lifelong fan, so I'll say if I was reviewing this with only my head and not my heart, only 2, well they're not criticisms, but only 2 things would I address in only a tiny way negative. First, the song "Symptoms" isn't way up there to me, with the rest of them. I think the subject matter and Mark's lyrics are right on, but the breakdown in the chorus wasn't for me, and it felt a bit plodding. The other thought I had was in the song "Girl", I would have come back to a chorus again at the end cause it's such a strong hook, and I would have preferred a tastier more melodic solo[sort of like "Borderline"]
But enough of that stuff.....it's Fu$%^&ing awesome to have him back, I gotta tell you!!!, [no I don't, cause you all knew that] For a guy that means so much to me[and us] to really deliver on so many levels here really inspires me. His vocals are great, I love the harmonies and arrangements. One of my favorite things is the drumming. I've only ever heard H-Bomb on GFR and Farner songs that I knew already. What he does in these 11 songs is exactly what should be done, tasteful and exciting, and the drum sound is great too!
I feel real strongly about "Girl" and "You're My Girl", probably the most commercial things on here. I think that "You Know Who I Am" fits in with both Rock music as well as Gospel. It's such an uplifting message that could cross so many musical barriers.
"Where Do We Go From Here' didn't jump out at me at first, but man it's great, and now I can't get enough of it. You know I don't always agree with all of Mark's politics or beliefs, but he's got as much a right to say them as anyone. There are artists out there like Neil Young, Pearl Jam, the Dixie Chicks who speak their mind and it's all over the news, well, Mark's been around just as long or longer than most of em', and he deserves his place back on a national soapbox, right?
The other tunes like "Cry Baby", "Nadean" and "This Time" are just good, timeless rock and roll songs. Again, the playing by all members of the band is just right. The sound is both timely and timeless.
Which all leads us back to, well, to use Mark's words...."Where Do We Go From Here"? This music needs to get out there, and my hat goes off to all my good friends here at the Railroad who do their best to make this happen. I've gotten his cd into the hands of some radio stations and a national columnist to check out. I feel his management needs to come through big time on this. We've waited years for new music from Mark, and he's really taken care of us with this new cd. It would be a shame if it ends up just being a "well kept secret"
It's sort of like, when you fall in love and want everyone to know about it, just to see them as happy as you are about it, well that's the way I feel about "For The People"

I am totally in total amazement after listening to the new Mark Farner CD. It is by far the best stuff he has done in years. My favorite tracks are Where do we go from here, Girl, and Cry Baby. All great stuff. His NRG Band is also on Fire. I have recommended this CD to all the Mark Farner fans that I come across on a daily basis. Rock ON Mark!! We will be waiting for ya when you come down to Texas.

I`VE BEEN A FAN SINCE 1970, I GOT MY FIRST GFR ALBUM AT THE AGE OF 12,SO I GUESS ITS TIME TO THROW IN MY 2 CENTS ON THE < FOR THE PEOPLE > ALBUM.

AS FOR THE SONG WRITING AND CHOICES, MARK YOU GOT IT PERFECT. I HAVE NEVER LISTENED TO AN ALBUM WHERE I JUST LOVED ALL THE SONGS FROM START TO FINISH. 11 SONGS THAT JUST STAY WITH THE LISTENER AND WONT GO AWAY, GREAT JOB.

I had listened to the CD in bits and pieces before today. I had a chance to really sit down with no distractions (which is rare), and this CD is truly wonderful. Also, seeing the show this past weekend and hearing about some of the songs, and who they're about, I feel as though it is a snapshot of Mark's heart and soul, what really matters to him, and what really matters (or should matter), to everyone - all the stuff one has to care about in this life. I am PSYCHED to hear this new material, too.
Don't miss this one - it's a real gem. And Mark - don't stop now - keep 'em coming and keep rocking! LOVE it!

No need to review The New Sony/BMG Release of MARK FARNER
the ROCK PATRIOT "Extended Versions" for those of us that are
already familiar with LIVE NRG!! For those who are not this is a
very nice way for fans who might have "Missed " Mark or wonder
if he's still rockin' to get their questions answered in a mass
marking type of way. The Extended Versions series has been
a very successful way of selling LIVE versions of Greatest hits
packages for many artists or abridged versions of longer Live
albums (which this may apply to) But no disappointment here
as it's always great to here and Know that Mark and NRG
are getting out there into the larger outlets. This CD will be
available where all CD's are sold especially in Places like
BEST BUY, CIRCUIT CITY. Do some friends a favor.
Pick them up a copy of Extended Versions and consider
it a MARK FARNER "LIVE SAMPLER"
They'll be back for more!! I'll bet on it!

Hey all. I'm a GFR man from all the way back and thru GSGP, where the world ended for awhile. By the time my school years ended in 1980, you couldn't even say GFR. Heads, Greasers & Geeks alike had Floyd/Skynrd/Zepplin/Police/Stones/Bruce. GFR was gone, and any memory they had at that point in time was of Locomotion and the pop stuff (BTD & GSGP got no airplay). Hardly anyone at that time could name a tune from WAAB, much less the monster Knight-era records. And those that could do so became close friends. Basically, we were hosed by the GFR credibility gap you hear mentioned sometimes. The days were dark if GFR was your favorite band. And for me, it was.
So I got Marks solo albums when they were released. Just didn't get much redemption there. Later, I got the 2 sorta-GFR albums without Mel. A few songs were powerful, like RnR American Style & El Salvador. But generally they all sounded sorta like ATGiTWB when I was still looking for Survival. As time went on being the fan I am, I bought the Christian albums too. I always thought much GFR music had elements of faith, strength and spirituality - thats a thing that sets GFR apart. And its during this period I saw him perform for first time. Blew my mind. It was good enough that I went to see him 3 more times, loved it and began to see how all of this music could tie together.
Then I'm thirtysomething one day. On the web, I find Donna Wightman and the Guestbook. There's gonna be a reunion. We met online, and I *finally* see real GFR live, and they are honkin' great. Best I've ever seen. We became brothers & sisters, there are 3 new GFR tunes on TYOF, and I'm a roadkiller in Camden, in Red Bank, and New York. But I watch in horror as the world stops again, in a ball of allegory and confusion. What emerges from this is 2 separate bands and sides get drawn harshly. The days are black, if GFR was your favorite band. And for us, it surely was.
So now I'm fortysomething, and not new around here as you can see. And you're asking about For the People of which I have a copy. And I give a hoot about the subject.
For the People: Music A Words B+.
Rocks your entire face off, with words to match my views and a little sad humor to boot. the song is so good and so GFR its scary. Marks solo is wild & funky like Sins a Good Mans Brother. This song deserves airplay on the jaded, so-called rock stations. Best one here.
Cry Baby: Music A Words B+.
Great chorus. I hear something of a Bruce influence in this song. A mighty proud Bruce he would be. I could easily see this being a #1 hit for one of the major country artists (you know the kind that they actually allow on the radio). Second best song.
Nadean: Music B Words D
Has a Bad Time time groove. I'm surprised the words aren't better. Maybe some things are not well-said: "I could be the one to let you know". What does that mean ? And her face - what is wrong with it ? Am I taking this to seriously ?
Girl: Music C Words B
Kinda Beach Boys feel. Too relaxed for me. I think this song mostly serves the great guitar solo. I intensely dislike the DX-7-ish keyboard sound.
You Know Who I Am: Music C- Words: C+
Produced like some of his Christian music, on the light side. Words are maybe going for a Comfort Me ? Thats a long way to go.
Same Ol Feeling: Music B Words B
Again it sounds a little light, and the groove isn't especially catchy. Good solo. The outtro is not impressive with all those layers of voice
You're My Girl: Music A Words B
Holy Cow Batman. The Sax rips. The groove sounds like a hot summer day with the Temptations on-stage, and it feels GOOD. I hear that old Detriot sound, and it makes me happy. Go Mark Go ! 3rd best song, by only a very slim margin.
This Time: Music B Words C+
Sounds like a catchy tune from the early '80s, maybe the Hooters or John Waite. Screaming twin solo on Sax & Guitar. Words are a little bland. 5th best song.
Waiting Here for You: Music B- Words B-
A dark dirge thats half GFR / half Christian. I love the line "In my heart I know the answers / Never made it to my head". Thats the vintage GFR / Mark we know and love. Well spoken. I'm not really sure who he's waiting for - is it Jesus or a girl ? 4th best song
Symptoms: Music B Words C
Sax rips again. I can't identify with the meaning of the words, if its about sex. Maybe I don't understand his point. I will ponder this.
Where Do We go From Here: Music B Words C
Again, sonically its got that drippy DX-7 I'm not a fan of. I like the solo and outtro which reminds me of Life.
Overall: B with some major standouts.
I think its Marks stongest solo record ever, especially given there are no covers. I can tell that Mark reached into himself for this one (yeah, he always does). Marks roots are clear in this music - I hear shades from just about every period his career, and I imagine infulences from his early church days in some arrangements. The production/arrangements are great on the songs I think are good, and wimpy on those I don't. Beth adds goodness to the mix, but she sounds a lot like Mark. I probably could stand fewer songs with girl & baby in the lyrics.
He uses (what I call) his trademark "Indian Sound" for most leads, and proves again that nobody outguns Mark Farner. Nr'G sounds just fine, more like a band than in previous solo efforts. And I'm not even going to talk to his vocals - whats the point ? He is without a doubt, one of the top singers ever.
The album graphics are pretty darn good, with my favorite being the "gig-bag" pictures inside the jacket. That and the dedication to his friend.
I know from experience than even songs I don't care for sound great when done live. So the world is again turning. For me, it surely is.
John E. Philips

Hey Mark! Just got my hands on your new CD For The People and I have to say, its smokin hot! I have played it over and over several times and it will remain in my CD player for a long time, great stuff, good sounds, awesome vocals. For the people really rocks and is my fave new tune for at least the year 2006. My son and his wife loved it too and they are only youngin's (age 22) and said the CD rocks. Thanks Mark for the great tunes.

I wanted to wait till I had a chance for the cd to sink in... so here goes!
I want to start by saying that it has been since 1991 since Mark has released a new "FULL LENGTH" CD. I have been asking him since the first time I saw him play in 1992 at The Station in Wilkes-Barre Pa. He told me then it is coming out in April of 93....FLASH AHEAD 13 YEARS! We'll Mark delivered on his promise!
Track 1 "For The People:
The CD starts with the title track "For The People" and Let me tell you this song simply "KICKS ASS". From what I get from this song it is Mark's aggravation on the current status of what is left of this great country! Musically overall this song delivers the goods! Great guitar work and shows what a great guitar player Mark is! Hubert is absolutley sick on the drums on this track! This would be a great song for Mark to open his current shows with!
Track 2: Cry Baby: Love the keyboards on this track and Paul E O sounds incredible almost like a Hammond B3 effect! Marks Wah Wah "Cry Baby guitar pedal on this gives it a very Hendrix-ish feel! The message kind of reminds me of a couple going thru some turmoil trying to resolve some issues! Love the background vocals as well!
Track 3: Nadene: This track has a very poppy feel to it...Very clean guitar work on the rhythm and I love the sound of the hook on the guitar and solo. Again Background vocals sound superb! This song has that "bouncing ball" theory! This could be on Adult Contemporary Mainstream Radio today! If Hall and Oates can do it you can too Mark! The song is basically about a man who cannot forget a woman!
Track 4: Girl: This is what I have been waiting for! I have always loved ballads in general! But I have always loved Marks ballads! This is the area where Mark "EXCELS". He is a true balladeer! Marks vocals are phenomenal! Just a great true love song! Beth Griffins backgrounds adds a whole new element! The harmonies are right on! The solo in song blew me away for a slow song it kinda sounds like a "Eddie Van Halen" Eruption solo! Truly amazing! NUFF SAID!
Track 5: You Know Who I Am: I get a lot of mixed messages from this song..Could this be the GREAT "I AM" who Mark is singing about. This song reminds me the most of Marks solo Christian stuff from the "Wake Up" era. Very clean sounding song overall. I know who "I AM " is!
Track 6: Same Ol' Feelin: This Track Mark offered as a free MP3 download on his website before releasing the record. This song reminds me the most of Grand Funk! Just the heaviness of it! Great Rock N Roll sing along song about people rising up and making a difference!
Track 7: You're My Girl: This song has a great Motown feel to it with Paul E O's Sax work and Marks vocal prevailing! I really like Marks vocal inflection on this when he says "You will always be mine" and drags out the "Mine". I assume this is Mark's tribute to his wife ! Just a great song about finding true love!
Track 8:This Time: Another songs about trying to reinstate a relationship and get it back! Kind of reminds me of Airborne Ranger sounding song! Huberts drums work on this is great! This could easily become a staple for the Farner shows!
Track 9: Waiting Here For You:
I have to emphasize this is the strongest track on the CD in my opinion!
This song starts out with a haunting keyboard making you want to listen! I have not figured what Mark was writing about...BUT it can mean many things...I am thinking an Indian God or God or as someone suggested to me about Mark's encounter with a more intelligent life! Paul E O's native flute and keyboards in this song and Bob Grundner's shakers add a total enchanting element to this song. The chorus is absolutely TOP NOTCH on of Marks finest works since Closer To Home. Marks vocals again as a balladeer excel on this song. This song SHOULD have had an added verse then extended at the end and repeated like Closer To Home...This is a must for the NRG's live show...I do hope they add it to the set list! Overall it is a 10. Now one of my favorite Farner Songs!
Track 10: Symptoms: Great Sax work on this one as well...Paul E O is all over this song like stink on @#$%!!! Great guitar work and background vocals! Great bridge in this one...A song about overcoming the day to day temptations of the symptoms of the flesh of man! Another great song!
Track 11: Were Do We Go From Here: Another message from Mark about the Government finding another path to follow. Love the Keyboards in this one. Great solo on this one as well! really shows Mark can play!
Overall this album sounds incredible the Mix, The Production and the sound I am a DJ and I play Marks stuff out promnoting it. It sounds phenomenal on my 1200 Watt Yorkville system. This is a great album for the Mark Farner and Grand Funk to own. You will not be dissapointed! Thanks for the new CD Mark and NRG!

In my opinion the best that Mark has done to send the message that he's a solo artist who is stepping out of the shadow of the past.Being a Rock legend carries with it the unfortunate comparisons of former glory and can be near impossible to equal.I have been and will continue to be a critic of Mark's politics( although he stands in the majority at this time in history)but have always said he is capable of being a solo superstar if he would just start writing music that showed his MATURITY!! For the people has given me the first genuine rush of "Farner fever" in 20 years. From the beginning of "For the people" to "Where do we go from here" is a journey through Mark's career in rock, religion, love and heritage.Timely and rallying, He has done no Covers nor tried to invoke past glory, showing instead his songwriting excellence and thankfully, his vocal prowess.I disagree with some who think the use of the DX-7 sound was a mistake, quite the opposite for me .One thing that does remind me of the "old " days is that the more you listen the better you like it. My favorite by far is "Waiting here for you",The vocals , the music and the message invoke the image of the 'loneliest rider" staring to the heavens as a thundering drumbeat ushers in a storm of spirtual warriors , chilling. A little somthing for everyone, with a sense that there is lot more to come , Bravo!!

I have been a staunch supporter of Mark for 37 years.Having 28 Mark/GFR albums in my library, having attended 17 Mark/GFR shows, and being a guitarist of 30 years myself,my review here of For The People will be unbiased. My honest opinion here. Not being based on my fandom or friendship with Mark, I state here that I feel this to be one of
Marks very best.In fact, perhaps THE best.Besides the music itself there are many other factors that come into play in my analysisof this release,a few that I shall try to elaborate on here. For one thing, the timing.Over the years, each GFR/Mark album that came out was released at a particular time to a particular generation and conveying the overall messages to the people of that time.I.E.-the late 60s,70s,80s,90s.There are those of us who stuck with Mark during the common ground days of the 80s,and have ( those albums of that era as well.Yes,For The People seems to have been long overdue.Since that time, original GFR had toured in the late 90s,Bosnia,Anthology,and a host of greatest hits and other cds had been released. As well as fairly recently,NRG Live. For The People couldnt have been released at a better time than now,as Im sure many would agree, and reflects not only great music and singing, but a splendid versatility of it as well.Like taking the best of the bygone eras and wrapping them all into one.The versatility of this cd,as well as the lyrics, music and overall aspects of it,conveys an important message for our times on both personal and universal levels, and appeals across the boards to many genres of people from all walks of life, instilling in its listeners a unique emotional euphoria all its own.Thats something you just dont see in the industry very often anymore. Not only is this versatility present with the varience of songs on the cd,but also in the individual songs themselves,in their musical/vocal arrangements as well as the messages conveyed within them, causing the listener,(at least this listener),a true rush of emotional bliss as we connect with the music and lyrics. This is even regardless of ones own musical preferences. The dynamics of utilizing various rhythems, very fine vocal arrangements, accoustical(Nadine is my favorite) or brass combined with electric accompaniments, and the overall messages conveyed, along with the timing of this cds release, all combine into a synergy of a very well done musical project that is found appealing to all various genres of people.Again, you just dont see that very often in the industry anymore.Any record promoter that has any lick of sense at all would have to see the tremendous potential and vast talent, versatility and appeal that Mark Farners-For The People represents in todays musical marketplace. This is why I genuinely feel this to be Marks best release yet and Im sure there are quite a few others out there that do concur with me on this.
Thanks again Mark and NRG for a job WELL DONE and most certainly ON TIME.
Peace,
--Chris Weeks

My wife and I purchased the new cd at the Toledo show. I have always been a huge fan of yours. I've had the pleasure of listening to the cd in its entirety several times and each time I find something new that appeals to me even more so. The photo insert is very good too. The pics of you show your true self, nothing fake, nothing show-offish. For the people touches allot of points and ONE of my favorites is Your'e my girl. On my rock music scale, I give the cd an A+

"For The People" review revisited
OK, everybody loves Mark Farner and his music. Why? I think, for me, it was listening to those that my parents listened to while I was growing up. (Engelbert, Tom Jones, Frank, Dean, the REAL SINGERS!!!)
Mark's VOICE has always been the ultimate "ear candy", right from "Anybody's Answer" up to present.
I've had 3 weeks to monopolize the CD player (from my wife), who prefers Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) but she's "comin around". We all have our favorites, but ALL are great, singable, enjoyable, beautiful NEW Mark Farner music.
I'm glad he's "softened" the CCM approach. (It can get TOO anti-Mel Gibson-ish). The songs are too short, so maybe Mark can give us some extended versions next time. (Mark, I like them 4-1/2 to 6-1/2 minutes
in length).
Here's the thing I wish you would do: drop the baby, baby, girl, girl, baby girl thing and sing more about the country, the government, growing up on Uncle Jack's farm, the music business, your grand children, horses, Don and Mel letting you down, the great fans you meet and love, the fact that GOD gave you MUSIC, but enough with the baby, girl LOVE songs.
I know your liner notes talk about simple plain ole folks etc., and GFR "was" a garage band of guys, but come on Mark get inspired in your lyrics without being preachy about Jesus and lost love, found love etc. Hell, I wish you had a song about your trip to Japan last year; what inspiration did that bring to you?
If your objective is to find your way to RADIO, then God Bless you because you've given them 11 reasons. Also get your management to get on TV and get some of your music into MOVIES (like Queen Bee), just pick a better, more contemporary/wide appeal film.
I almost want to give up my high paying job to come and help you "break out" into the mainstream like you deserve.
Neil Young can do it and his voice sucks!
Cheers
--Pedge

Below is a column by: George Deahl. The actual column will also include album artwork in a magazine "AMARILLO STYLE" available in Amarillo, Texas.
Mark Farner is not a name you hear every day. His name might not be too familiar to your average reader of this column but to thousands more, he was one third of one of the first and most loved and despised heavy metal bands in the United States, Grand Funk Railroad. I still listen to GFR, (Grand Funk Railroad), to this day, and cherish every one of their songs on my IPod. They were and are a big part of my life. Mark Farner wrote at least 95% of every GFR song. He was there voice. When you slide his first new CD in 6 years into the Range Rover, you will automatically know the voice, and then you’ll hear the guitar work of Mark in all its glory. Mark will be 57 this September, but he still has that powerful voice from the day, still hitting those notes and sounding as soulful as ever. His guitar playing is better than it’s ever sounded. And Mark has no reason to slow down; he's too busy making rock and roll.
From the opening drumbeat and very recognizable guitar riffs, from the title track,’ For the People’, you know this record is going to rock. Now Mark calls himself the,’Rock Patriot’, and you can tell from his lyrics. He loves his country, but he’s pissed off at the way its being run by the government, as a lot of others are. Mark sings, “Apathy in my people, brain washed by TV. The spirits of tyrants got on us. I see their faces down there when I pee. It makes me want to throw up, when I think about out the IRS”. People! This man is upset and he’s ready for a fight. Farner wants to know what happen to,” for the people, by the people”. I can’t help but think when I hear this song and Mark singing that it would be a killer GFR track.
‘Cry Baby’ once again has some stinging guitar work throughout, and with Farner’s love of the Hammond B-3, it fits well into the song. There are great harmonies on this, plus that distinguishable triplet pattern from the Parker guitar, that Mark should copyright.
“Same Ol’ Feelin”, is by far the most sounding GFR song on the disc. The track opens with this booming, fuzzed out bass guitar, and then Mark slides in with that sweet triplet pattern again. You’ve heard this song before, or maybe you wish you would hear it. Again, Farner is giving ‘em hell and trying basically to wake up America. “Are you ready for the crap, they’re dumpin on our heads this time. Are you ready for the tears, nothin’ can erase this time. It’s not the same ol story, It’s about to change our lives. It’s not the same ‘ol glory, but it’s the same ‘ol feelin’”. Mark’s trademark guitar goes off on a tangent that makes your hair stand on end. But Mark has a positive spin when he sings,” We’ll do the right thing maybe we can see it all work out”. I can tell you from past experiences and chats I have had with the Funker, Mark loves America, but he’s just dam fed up.
‘Waiting Here for You’, is a heavy song and once again, if you’re a fan, you just can’t help but feel that this could easily be yet another GFR track. Mark throws in some of his Native American heritage into this song too. The beginning sounds dark, almost evil in ways, but it’s a song of eternal salvation. Mark, the warrior has to fight the evil side to claim victory. It’s the battle between good and evil. The salvation is,” You know how I’ve been waiting. So uncertain, so unclear. I can feel the fear go fleeting, as sure as you draw near”.
Mark doesn’t let a subject go by without making a song about it. In the case of ‘Symptoms’, its Mark’s personal story perhaps. A married man, in a world of lust and temptation, and trying to, well let’s just say, ‘to stay clean’. Mark gets right down to the point with,” I was sittin’ round one day when I heard that voice within me said, yea, go on and just be friends with her and together you can be as one. Symptoms of the flesh, you can’t keep your words from hurting. We can’t give up gotta keep workin”. It is a struggle to a human trying to lead a good life, with the world always getting in the way.
Mark Farner waited 6 long years to give us music and its well worth the wait. For now the only way you can purchase this CD is through Mark’s web site. Please try and visit, it’s got tons of information and history. But, the main objective here is to buy the CD You can go to, www.markfarner.com. Mark, would love for his fans form GFR and of today come by and say hello and leave him a message, he reads them all. More than anything, the music speaks for its self. It is true rock and roll…American style.
